Wallpaper* Magazine

Online Designer

2006 – 2008 · London, UK

Wallpaper* is a publication covering architecture, art, design, fashion, lifestyle and travel.

As Wallpaper* magazine’s first in-house Online Designer, I was responsible for the design and development of various editorial, marketing and sponsorship features on Wallpaper.com. This included the creative direction and production of interactive, audio and video features.

In the two years since McManus joined our team, Wallpaper’s online presence has evolved into a bells-and-whistles affair, with daily input and impressive interactive projects. It’s McManus’s magic that has been sprinkled over the online version of the Architects Directory. While life for the online team can be hectic, he says, ‘the best thing is the variety, from architecture to fashion to event coverage like the Salone del Mobile’.

Working with the editorial team, day-to-day responsibilities included selecting and editing photos to support articles and galleries on Wallpaper.com, with subjects spanning architecture, art, beauty, design, fashion, technology and travel.

To coincide with the monthly print publication, I was given creative license to design and develop several special projects. Each project provided the opportunity to produce visually compelling, experimental interfaces, with a mix of familiar and novel interactions.

Special projects included the 2008 Wallpaper* Architects Directory, an online showcase of the best architecture of the year, curated by Richard Cook and Ellie Stathaki; Wallpaper* EcoEdit, an online exhibition of the best eco-friendly architecture, beauty products, design, fashion, food, packaging, transport and travel, curated by Suzanne Trocmé; and the 2008/09 Wallpaper* Year Planner, a calendar of need-to-know events and insider tips for the year, curated by the Wallpaper* team.

As Wallpaper’s digital ambitions grew, in 2007 I traveled to Münster for the Skulptur Projekte to coordinate and oversee the direction of a behind the scenes video shoot and a few video interviews. This coincided with the Urban Farm themed cover story for the magazine, lead by Nick Compton.

In 2007 and 2008, I attended Salone del Mobile in Milan for on the ground coverage of the design fair. Coverage included publishing daily dispatches from Wallpaper’s Design Editor, Hugo Macdonald; shooting, editing and publishing video interviews with up-and-coming designers such as Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer and Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby; and sending daily email newsletters.

As Wallpaper’s editorship changed hands from Jeremy Langmead to Tony Chambers, so did the scope of editorial coverage to include a new focus on contemporary art. In 2008, I had the opportunity to work with BAFTA award winning artists Langlands & Bell, to produce Departures, an online interactive installation showcasing some of their recent artworks.

After two fast-moving years at Wallpaper*, I was hired by the former publisher of the magazine to be a founding member of Phaidon Press’ Digital Products team. Learn about my work at Phaidon, here.
